Judith Leiber’s purses to be featured at event

If you love purses and want to learn more about a Holocaust survivor who made a name for herself, check out an event at the Sunnyslope Historical Society & Museum.

The museum at 737 E. Hatcher Road will host a display of Judith Leiber handbags from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 21. Leiber was a handbag designer known for purses with intricate details and whimsical styles, made with ostrich, alligator, whipsnake, crystals and other unusual materials. Born in Hungary, she and her family survived the Holocaust. Amy Phillips, a retired banker and owner of the collection, will talk about Leiber’s rise in the fashion industry.

An autographed copy of Leiber’s book, “The Artful Handbag” and one of her purses will be auctioned, and lunch will be served. Proceeds will help pay for upgrades to the Sunnyslope Historical Society & Museum’s building. For tickets, visit sunnyslopehistoricalsociety.org/event/judith-leiber-collection.
